A portfolio built like a championship basketball franchise
I've spent a lot of time going over how I wanted to structure my long term portfolio. The number of names has ranged from 10-30 while managing my long term account.
After experimenting with varying numbers of positions and different sizes, I found a style I like - build it like a basketball team.
Basketball teams typically have 12-15 players. Championship teams have two or three all-stars in the starting five, at least one or two solid bench players who could be starters somewhere else, and then you have the remainder of the bench who are made up of players that define a certain role or are loaded with potential.
I extrapolated this basketball roster-building framework into my portfolio. This had me on the lookout for five starters who would do the bulk of my scoring, three or four good bench players, and the rest would be role players with a couple of high-potential up-starts.
By taking the opportunity to trade overperforming bench players earlier this fall, the 14 names held in the portfolio make the roster nearly full of starting players. Go team go!
